What is TOUCH ID and how does it work?
Touch ID has become a truly revolutionary technology for the entire iPhone lineup. Since the technology was first introduced at the unveiling, unlocking your device has not only become secure, but also as convenient as possible. For Touch ID, there were a lot of uses other than unlocking the device.
Touch ID is a fingerprint scanner used on the iPhone and other Apple products. Apple first added it to the iPhone 5S in 2013. Since then, for the past 5 years, this technology has been actively used in iPhones, iPads, and even MacBooks.
Touch ID allows you to unlock your device just by touching a special surface. On mobile devices, this is the "Home" button, on macbooks, it's a key.
After its appearance, Touch ID quickly gained wide popularity as you no longer need to enter long passwords to unlock your smart for a couple of seconds. They place a finger and in a moment the device is available for use.
Apple devices store many of the components of a user's digital life. To protect this important information and prevent it from being leaked, it is always recommended to use password protection. Touch ID on iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro lets you use your fingerprint instead of entering a passcode in many everyday situations. One touch is enough for the sensor to instantly read your fingerprint and automatically unlock the device. This technology can be used to verify purchases in the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, and in combination with Apple Pay. Developers can enable Touch ID for authorization in their apps.

How does Touch ID work?There are currently two generations of Touch ID. They differ in data read speed and thus faster unlocking. The second generation has been incorporated since the iPhone 6S, and the unlock speed is actually faster there.
The Touch ID sensor is built into the home button and is covered in sapphire crystal. This allows you to reliably protect the scanner from minor mechanical damage. The built-in sensor scans the fingertip and recognizes the pattern on it. Also, no matter what angle you place your finger at – top, bottom, side – the device unlocks easily. You can add multiple fingers at once to unlock your device with either hand.

So one of the AuthenTec technologies formed the basis for Touch ID with a capacitive CMOS sensor that can scan a fingerprint with a resolution of 500 pixels per inch. This made it possible to obtain a fairly accurate impression, minimizing the risk of false positives.
iPhone equipped with high technologyTouch ID uses some of the most advanced hardware and software ever used on an Apple device. The button is made from sapphire crystal, one of the purest and most durable materials available. It protects the sensor and acts as a lens that precisely focuses the finger. The steel ring that surrounds the button on iPhones and iPads detects your finger and tells the Touch ID sensor to start reading your fingerprint.
The transducer uses an advanced capacitive touch panel to provide high-quality images for small segments of the subepidermal layers of the skin. Touch ID then analyzes this information with an exceptional level of detail and accuracy. Fingerprint details fall into three main categories: arc, ring, or curl. Details of the scallops that are not visible to the human eye are noted, and even small deviations in the directions of the scallops created by the pores and edge structure are recognized.
Touch ID can read multiple fingerprints as well as 360-degree rotation. It then creates a mathematical representation of the fingerprint and compares it to stored data to find a match and unlock your device. Only the mathematical representation of the fingerprint is saved, not its actual image. Each time, Touch ID adds to this mathematical representation to improve matching accuracy over time.
Equipped with Security MeasuresEach fingerprint is unique, so even the smallest areas of different fingerprints in Touch ID are unlikely to match. It's only 1:50,000 for a saved print. At the same time, Touch ID allows only five failed attempts to read the fingerprint and then proceeds to request a password. By comparison, the chances of guessing a typical four-digit access code are 1 in 10,000. Also, some codes are easier to guess (like 1234), but there are no easy-to-guess fingerprints.
To get started with Touch ID, you must first enable password protection on your iPhone, iPad, or MacBook Pro. This password is entered as an additional security measure in the following cases:
1.- After restarting iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
2.- If more than 48 hours have passed since the last unlock.
3.- When adding and removing Touch ID fingerprints.
4.- When you change the system password of your iPhone, iPad or Mac and other Mac security settings, such as the FileVault encryption.
5.- In case of five failed authorization attempts using Touch ID.
6.- After logging out of an account on a Mac computer.
To improve security, you can set a long and complex password consisting of letters and numbers. On your iPhone or iPad, tap Password Options and select Custom Code (letters + numbers).
If your device is lost or stolen, you can disable Touch ID in Find My iPhone Lost Mode to prevent it from being used to unlock your device. Starting with iOS 7, iPhone and iPad can provide additional protection against theft with Activation Lock, which requires you to enter your Apple ID and password to turn off Find My iPhone, wipe data, or reactivate your device. If your MacBook Pro with Touch ID is lost or stolen, remote wipe will also disable Touch ID.

Touch ID can also provide the level of security you need when using your MacBook Pro with multiple users. Up to three fingerprints can be registered in each user account, and only five fingerprints can be registered in the system in total.

Equipped with Secure EnclaveThe device's chip includes an advanced security technology called Secure Enclave, designed to protect password and fingerprint data. Touch ID doesn't store fingerprint images, it just uses their mathematical representations. From such a representation it is impossible to obtain the real image of the print.
Fingerprint data is encrypted, stored on the device, and protected with a key that is only available to the Secure Enclave. They are used exclusively by the Secure Enclave system and only to verify that the fingerprint matches the stored data. They cannot be accessed from the operating system or any program running on it. The data is never transferred to Apple servers, is not backed up with iCloud or any other service, and cannot be verified against any other fingerprint database .
How secure is Touch ID?Another advantage of Apple's solution is the high degree of protection of user data. Therefore, the fingerprints added to the device memory are stored in a special encrypted storage Secure Enclave . This area is located on the processor itself and is not accessible from outside.
Especially for this, the company developed a 64-bit Apple-A7 processor, which met all the requirements for working with Touch ID technology. It is capable of storing the user's biometric data and is a piece of hardware connected to the scanner button itself. It is simply impossible to replace a broken Touch ID sensor, it must be replaced together with the motherboard on which the processor is soldered.
This feature is available on all processors, from the Apple A7 to the modern Apple A14, and when used in a computer, the T1, T2, and M1 processors are responsible for Touch ID.
This was done for security reasons so that attackers could not steal a smartphone and gain access to the data stored on it by replacing the sensor button.
As an additional means of protection, a smartphone unlock code is used. If you don't turn it on, you won't be able to use Touch ID. You'll need to enter the code after every iPhone reboot or after 48 hours of inactivity. Therefore, the device is also protected against all kinds of Touch ID hacking mechanisms. Similar protection is activated when removing or installing a SIM card, as well as after activating SOS mode.
The technology turned out to be quite safe and secure. Although rare ways to hack Touch ID have appeared on the net, most users should not worry. The technology to obtain and duplicate a user's fingerprint is very complex and expensive to use. At the same time, you will not get a 100% working capacity guarantee, but you may run into the time limit set by the system to unlock using Touch ID.

The system is completely autonomous and does not send any data to the network. This ensures that Secure Enclave protected information cannot be intercepted or stolen by third-party servers.

What is Touch ID for?Touch ID secures many processors and speeds up authentication. As we said, the first and main task is to unlock the device. In addition, Touch ID allows you to confirm actions with iCloud. The most common usage scenario, if you want to see all the saved passwords of the sites, confirm the action with a fingerprint scanner.

How to configure Touch ID?For best effect and to avoid further inconvenience, make sure your hands are clean and the button itself is not "dirty".
1.- Go to Settings "Touch ID & Passcode" and enter your password.
2.- Click Add fingerprint.
3.- Next, lightly touch the Home button with one finger.
The system will need several such taps to fully read your drawing on your finger. Every time you slightly change your finger position, the figure will show which area has already been scanned and which ones require additional touches. Once everything is ready, the system will report success. In the same way, you can add a new fingerprint or use just one.
