What information does a SIM contain?
![]() |
In everyday speech, the word "SIM" is a device that is an electronic identifier, which belongs to the more general class of "smart cards". Technically, a SIM card is a microprocessor embedded in a small piece of plastic. Each of these "smart records" is assigned ICCID, a special international format code.
What information does a SIM contain
A SIM card is a device made in the form of a piece of plastic with a smart padding. It is one of the subscriber identification modules in telephone networks. It is a microcomputer, which includes a microprocessor and a set of memory types: permanent / operational / rewritable (ROM / RAM / EEPROM). Communication with the outside world occurs through an interface consisting of several electrical contacts.
The SIM'ka card has buses for the input and output of information and stores various information. First of all, this is general user information: SIM menu, phone book, call lists, short messages, as well as various additional options. Then, the user's personal identification numbers PIN and PUK, which are the secret codes of the SIM card. A four-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number) is registered on the card upon issuance. Together with it, the cardholder receives the PUK1 / PUK2 unblocking codes (PIN unblocking key). With the help of it, it is possible not only to unlock the phone, but also to change the PIN code.
What is necessary for a SIM card is the identification data recorded on it. They are designated by the following abbreviations:
Ki (key): a unique key used for SIM card authentication in the GSM mobile network. This is the 128-bit value assigned to the SIM during the carrier customization process.
IMSI is an identification number that a mobile subscriber uses when entering the international communication space (International Mobile Subscriber Identifier). In fact, this is the system username. This number allows you to associate the cardholder with their account with the provider.
IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It is used in mobile phones of the GSM, WCDMA and IDEN networks, as well as some satellite phones. The value is unique for each device used.
ICCID is an international SIM card code that identifies a subscriber with an operator that provides communication services (Integrated Circuit Card ID). It is entered in the provider's database and is also stored in the SIM in an unprotected way. In fact, this code is the unique serial number of each individual electronic identifier. When replacing the SIM card, you can save the phone number, you cannot leave the same SIM card number. ICCID is individual for each physical medium.
Technical information of smart phones?
Identifiers IMSI, MSISDN, ICCID of my smartphone:
A.- Important identifier behind the physical SIM card: ICCID (Integrated Circuit Card Identifier), which at the time of purchase is linked to IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) and MSISDN (11-digit subscriber number) .
B.- When you arrive at a mobile operator's office to get a new number, you are given a stack of SIM cards to choose from. These are SIM cards with a pre-prepared ICCID-IMSI-MSISDN package. When restoring a SIM card (for example, in case of loss), an employee of the mobile operator selects any SIM card from this stack, binds the ICCID to the current IMSI, and as a result receives its old number on the new SIM card.
C.- ICCID is universal, which led to the development of eSIM technology. It is a board integrated into a smartphone, programmed like a physical SIM card. It is impossible to remove it from the smartphone, it is a "part of the ship". This means that the data transfer will work, which gives some leeway. There is the possibility to erase data, block a smartphone or determine its geolocation.
D.- eSIM is not a panacea to lose a smartphone, it only gives the user time to find it.

The ICCID identifier refers directly to the SIM card, literally it means "microcircuit identification code" (ID of the integrated circuit card). This is a 19 or 20 digit block, containing information on where and to whom the SIM card was issued (country, manufacturer, release date, operator), its individual internal number, and the encryption control value.
Since the SIM card numbers should not be repeated even by accident, the rules provided by the international technical standard ITU-T E.118 apply to generate ICCID.

1.- The first two digits are MII (Major Industry Identifier), an industry identifier in accordance with the ISO / IEC 7812-1 standard. The main industry code used for telecommunication purposes is 89. That is, all SIM cards always have a serial number that begins with 89.
2.- Characters from the third to the fourth (or fifth) - country telephone code according to recommendation E.164. This technical standard specifies the general international telecommunications numbering plan and the format of the numbers used in telephone networks.
3.- The next four (or five) digits identify the organization that issued the card. The numbers are indicated, which are issued by the ITU-T international telecommunications units to each telecommunications operator that issues SIM cards.
4.- Digits 18 (or 19): internal identifier of the SIM card. The organization that provides the communication services defines this code not according to a general rule, but according to its regulations. Therefore, each physical piece of plastic is linked to the identifier of the vendor's software part.
The unique serial number of the SIM card is a set of numbers grouped into three ICCID mini-blocks = (IE) + (IR) + (P).
4.1.- IE (IIN): the issuer's identification number (issuer identification number). Together, the first three coding fields (from the 1st to the 7th character in total): 89 - fixed digits for all SIM cards
42.- IR (IID): identifier of the SIM card (individual ID). A block of 11 digits next (from 8 to 18) is the internal number encoded by the telecommunications operator. In this case: 1111XXXX607 in Beeline format.
4.2.- P (P) - control ratio in coding digits (parity). The last character in a sequence of 19 or 20 characters.
5.- The last character is the control of the serial number (parity). This is a number (sometimes a letter), which is calculated from all other ICCID numbers using a special Luna algorithm. The algorithm is simple and not cryptographic. "Control" testifies to the fact that during encoding in the international identifier "SIM" there was no inadvertent data corruption.

How to find out the ICCID of a SIM card
The unique serial number of the SIM card is stored in it unprotected and can be easily read in various ways.
1.- The simplest thing is to look at the serial number of the device on the box with the SIM card. IPad has ICCID engraved on the back cover.
2.- Most of the time, the identifier is placed directly on the SIM card: on the back, near the chip. ICCID numbers are laser etched into the plastic part of the physical medium.
3.- The information can be found directly on the "smartphone" when the card is installed in it.
3.1.- Apple technology owners should go to "Settings", select "General" and then click on "About device".
3.2.- For smartphones running the Android operating system, it is enough to perform similar actions: menu item "About phone", then "General information" and "SIM cards".
3.3.- If you have a disabled iPhone, the procedure is as follows. The device must be locked. Upon further unlocking, the I symbol will appear on the screen (bottom right). By clicking on this.
4.- Experts position this method of obtaining information about the SIM card as the simplest and most accurate. We connect the iPad to the computer through a cable. Go to iTunes and select your iPad. The information will appear in the main window. We look at the "serial number" line.
5.- It is possible to find out the unique number of the SIM card by installing alternative software. You can download programs such as SIM serial number or SIM card details. For Android devices, it is recommended to use a special application of the same ICCID name.

ICCID
Each SIM card has unique identifier - ICCID (Integrated Circuit Card Identifier). Serial number is stored in SIM card memory and printed on SIM card body. It's required when you want to transfer phone number from one operator to another. You can pull out SIM from the phone and check the ICCID number but there is easier way - just use ICCID application.
This application allows to get quickly ICCID value without pulling SIM card. In addition it displays information about SIM card mobile network operator.

The SIM card stores the IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) subscriber identifier:
The number consisting of 15 digits.
The IMSI identifier - subscriber identifier (international mobile subscriber identity) - is a number consisting of 15 digits, which can be divided into components:
1.- The first five digits represent a unique code - Mobile country code, assigned to the number at the time of registration on the network within the country
2.- The next ten digits represent the identifier within the network; the international subscriber number is sent to the network during authentication; the code is assigned by the cellular operator.
The IMSI of the smartphone contains information about the user's country of origin, that is, about the registration territory, as well as the work of the cellular operator. The data is stored in encrypted format. IMSI facilitates the linking of a cellular operator to a plastic card used to receive cellular services.
To find out the IMSI of a subscriber, you need the Find IMEI & MSI application. The utility is available for free on Google Play. For the program to work properly, it is not necessary to obtain root rights. After starting the utility, click the "Get" button. After that, a 15 digit code will be displayed in the "IMSI" section.

Find IMEI & IMSI
Now you can easily find your device IMEI and sim card IMSI code in just one touch.
IMEI: The International Mobile Station Equipment Identity or IMEI, is a number, usually unique to identify.
IMSI: The International Mobile Subscriber Identity or IMSI is used to identify the user of a cellular network and is a unique identification associated with all cellular networks.
UDID: Unique device ID. Each cellphone has a Unique Device Identifier (UDID), which is a sequence of letters and numbers that is specific to your device.

The IMSI is stored in the SIM (the card inserted in the mobile phone) and uniquely identifies the mobile station, your home wireless network and the country of origin of the home wireless network.
What is the MSISDN of a smartphone:
It is a number that uniquely identifies a subscription in a Global System for Mobile Communications or a Mobile Network of the Universal System for Mobile Telecommunications. It is the assignment of the telephone number to the subscriber's identity module on a mobile or cell phone. This more common abbreviation is "Mobile Station International Subscriber Directory Number".
The MSISDN and the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) are two important numbers that are used to identify a mobile subscriber. for
The MSISDN is used to route calls to the subscriber. The IMSI is often used as the key in the originating location record ("subscriber database") and the MSISDN is the number that is normally dialed to connect a call to the mobile phone. A SIM has a unique IMSI that does not change, while the MSISDN can change over time, that is, different MSISDNs can be associated with the SIM.
MSISDN identifier format
The ITU-T E.164 recommendation limits the maximum length of an MSISDN to 15 digits. 1-3 digits are reserved for the country code. Prefixes are not included (eg 00 prefixes of an international MSISDN when dialing from Sweden). The ITU-T does not specify the minimum length of the MSISDN, but the telecommunications regulator of each country specifies it in the national numbering plans.
A.- In GSM and its variant DCS 1800, MSISDN is built up as
MSISDN = CC + NDC + SN
CC = Country Code
NDC = National Destination Code, identifies one or part of a PLMN
SN = Subscriber Number
B.- In the GSM variant PCS 1900, MSISDN is built up as
MSISDN = CC + NPA + SN
CC = Country Code
NPA = Number Planning Area
SN = Subscriber Number
The country code identifies a country or geographical area, and may be between 1-3 digits. The ITU defines and maintains the list of assigned country codes.

What is the IMEI of the phone?
The International Mobile Equipment Identity (also known as IMEI) is an international identifier for mobile equipment. This means that not only in a single country, but in the whole world there are no two devices with the same IMEI. The identifier consists of 15 digits in decimal notation, although there are IMEIs where two more digits are used for identification. The number itself is required to register devices on GSM, WCDMA, and IDEN cellular networks, as well as some satellite phones.

What is the IMEI of the phone for?
As already mentioned, IMEI is a unique phone number, so it is convenient to use it to identify phones on a mobile operator's network. The mobile operator can use the IMEI to determine your phone model and the communication technologies it supports. It also allows mobile operators to blacklist the phone and not answer it again.
Due to its uniqueness, IMEI can be used to track a phone even if its owner changes SIM cards. Additionally, customs officials can use the IMEI to determine the legality of the phone.
It should be noted that IMEI is the identifier of the phone, not its subscriber. To identify a subscriber on mobile networks, another unique international number is used, which is called IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) and is registered on the user's SIM card.
How to find out phone IMEI
After IMEI is assigned to the phone, it is recorded in several ways that duplicate each other. Any of these methods can be used to find out the phone's IMEI.
1.- Enter a key combination. Dial the code * # 06 # on the digital or physical keypad (if you have a button phone). No additional actions such as pressing the call button are required: the code (or two codes, if the device has a two-digit one) will appear on the screen in a second.
2.- Remove the casing from the mobile. This option is only suitable for devices with dismantled housings, although these have been sold less and less recently, and the casing can only be disassembled at a service center. Usually the IMEI is written under the removable battery, the serial number of the device and the full model name will also be indicated there.
3.- Examine the original packaging. If you are 100% sure that it belongs to your device, look at its ends - there will be a label with IMEI. Information on package and coupon must match!
4.- Open configuration. Go to the main settings menu, find the item "About phone" - "General information" there. One of the lines in the list will contain the IMEI identifier data. Please note that the names of menu items may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Choose elements that have the most similar meaning possible so as not to be mistaken.
Is it possible to change the IMEI?
Yes, and for the first time this was said in 2002 by representatives of the British operators Vodafone and British Telecom. They said that users themselves can make the necessary changes to the software part of the phone. But if it is a device with a removable battery, the sticker with the IMEI will of course give the "native" digital sequence. Another thing is that changing the identifier is a difficult, risky task and in some countries it is also illegal.
The easiest way to change the IMEI is on Android smartphones, much more difficult - on Apple devices. To do this, owners of "Apple phones" should contact the official service center of their country, indicate the reasons for changing the number and submit a package of documents. We do not recommend that you experiment with changing the IMEI, the only exception is that the smartphone was returned to the owner after it was stolen. If the number was previously blocked, it will need to be updated so that the device can be used again for its intended purpose, for calls.
How to find a lost smartphone?
Finding your phone is not easy, but it is possible. So that the search is not in vain, at least two conditions must be met:
1.- Have the enabled status of the samrtphone.
2.- Have the google account active.
Note.- The device must have access to the network. If the device has been updated, there is no connection, it will not work to find the lost phone.
A.- Through the Google account
Any device that runs on the Android operating system is linked to the owner's personal account. This procedure is performed the first time the gadget is started, when the initial configuration screen appears. The link is required for device sync, backup, and remote access and control.
Through the Google account, a user of a normal computer or laptop can find a smartphone. But this will require an internet connection on another device:
A.1.- Go to the browser on the official page to find the device.
A.2.- In the upper right corner, select the account to which the device is linked or log in with your username and password.
A.3.- You have to reload the page. All devices associated with this profile will appear in the field.
A.4.- Click on the image and the name of the lost device.
A map will appear in a new window with the approximate location of the device. In addition, the interface will offer three alternative functions: a 5-minute call to find a device, lock a device, delete data from a phone.
B.- Android operating system functionality
To find a lost Android device, you will need to enable two functions: "location" and "find device". They are tied to the geolocation of the device and are responsible for finding the device when it is lost. If these options are inactive, the smartphone will not be able to track.
How to enable the functions:
1.- Go to the "configuration" of the device. Open the "Security" tab.
2.- In some versions of Android, it can be found in "Location protection" or "Google".
3.- Enable the "Find my device" option. Return to the setup menu, select "Location". Activate this option.
Note.- If the GPS chip is faulty or is simply not in the phone, you will not be able to find the device.
C.- Services included in the brand
Phone manufacturers (iPhone, Alcatel, Asus, Lenovo, Meizu, Philips, Nokia, Oppo, Phillips, Prestigio, Sony Xperia, HTC, Samsung, Xiaomi (Redme), ZTE, BQ, Vertex, Micromax, Digma, Fly, Umidigi , Oukitel, Texet, Leagoo, Dexp, Doogie, Huawei (Honor), HomTom, Chinese No-Names sold under the brands Megafon, Beeline, MTS, including button mobiles, etc) are trying to expand the functionality of their devices by creating software branded. For example, Xiaomi or Huawei devices work under their own MIUI and EMUI case, there are programs to find a smartphone. Let's look at some additional utilities available from different manufacturers.
C.1.- Xiaomi. In the shell of MIUI, there is a feature called Find My Phone. It works on the basis of the cloud service "Mi Cloud". To activate it, you must register in the My-account and enable the option: "Settings" -> "My Account" -> "My Cloud". At the bottom of the menu, activate the "Search device" function. After enabling this function, you can find a smartphone at
C.2.- Huawei. This brand faced the problem of locating Google services on its own devices in 2019-2021. Therefore, on some versions of the EMUI firmware, Google's standard solutions may not work. Huawei has implemented its own solution through the company's cloud service. The tracking feature is found in the "Find Phone" section of the website. The option is activated through standard Android functionality.
C.3.- Meizu. This company has developed its own application "Phone Finder". Unfortunately in 2020 this app was removed from Google Play so you can only find it on third party resources. After registering in this utility, the lost mobile phone can be found using another device, by entering the username and password. Another search method is to log into your account from the web version of the program.
C4.- Samsung uses Android's built-in functionality for location tracking functionality. But you can track your lost cell phone not only through Google, but also through a special Samsung service. In this case, the device must be connected to the Samsung account.
Note.- The above methods work only when a manufacturer brand personal account is enabled on your smartphone. It is imperative to enable geolocation and the presence of an internet connection on the lost device.
D.- Locate mobile with third-party programs
The standard set of programs and functions of the device is sometimes not enough. Third-party developer applications will help extend the functionality. Let's consider some of the most popular:

How to avoid losing your phone?
To make it easier to find your lost Android phone: keep geolocation active:
This consumes more power, but increases the chances of finding the device; use the services built into the firmware to find a gadget or similar functions available in antivirus programs.
How to activate integrated services:
1.- Go to "Settings". Look for "Security / Biometrics" or a similar tab.
2.- In the list, open Find phone or Phone Finder.
3.- Turn on Find My Phone. Follow the suggested instructions: sign in with an additional account and so on.
What to do if you can't find your phone
1.- Contact your operator to block the number. This will help restore it faster, prevent the leakage of money from mobile banking and the electronic money linked to it.
2.- Use the device search service and lock the device by specifying the contact information. If personal information is stored in memory, use a revert to factory settings.
3.- Contact the police to file a loss report. Take with you the box with the indicated IMEI and the receipt that damages the purchase of the device.
It is possible to find a lost smartphone, as long as geolocation is active on it or special software is installed. But the chances of finding a switched off phone are close to zero; the maximum is to establish the last point of connection to the network.
Note.- In case of theft, it makes sense to go to the commercial platforms and consult the sales announcements of similar models. To determine that this is the same device, check with the IMEI in the box that will help you.
